Oriental cockroaches are sometimes called “waterbugs” since they are attracted to moist environments.

They cannot fly at all and crawl much slower than other cockroaches – although they can climb walls.

Unlike other cockroach species, Oriental cockroaches typically live in colonies.

Oriental cockroaches are generally less timid than other cockroaches.

Oriental cockroaches are particularly fond of warm environments with a lot of moisture. They can be found both indoors and outdoors. 

Outside, they like to hang out under logs, piles of leaves or mulch, or around storm drains. 

In the home, they can be found in basements, bathrooms, kitchens and crawl spaces. They prefer to congregate around drains, leaky pipes, appliances and other areas with high moisture. If a space is too dry, they will likely leave.

Oriental cockroaches are also fond of decaying organic matter, so they will frequently be found around sewers and garbage bins.

Oriental cockroaches can carry food-borne contaminants such as e. coli and salmonella. They can spread these pathogens to food and other surfaces as they crawl around.

If the infestation is large, you might notice an unpleasant, musty smell.
