House flies are the most common type of fly you’ll encounter in Canada. Nearly 90% of all flies seen around human spaces are house flies.

House fly larvae are known as maggots. They are whitish grub-like creatures that can grow up to 12 mm long.

House flies feed on liquid food, and regurgitate their previously digested meals onto the surface of whatever they are feeding on.

House flies are attracted to warm, moist, high-protein organic matter which is in a state of decay. They lay eggs directly on these surfaces and these hatch into larvae that eat their way through the substance.

House flies are particularly attracted to decaying animal flesh, waste and garbage. They hang around dumpsters, garbage bins, food preparation areas and sewer drains.

In the average home, you’ll find them in kitchens, bathrooms, and around pet food and waste. They will also infest animal carcasses, so having lots of house flies in your space could indicate a rodent infestation.

House flies carry a host of microorganisms which can cause illness in humans. They contaminate surfaces they walk across with bacteria they pick up from decaying flesh and other organic matter. These include organisms such as salmonella and e. coli which can cause serious health issues.

The way house flies feed also contributes to the spreading of potentially harmful microorganisms. In order to consume their food, they eject saliva onto it and suck up the digested mixture through specialized mouthparts. This leaves behind bacteria which live inside the fly.

House flies are unsightly pests that turn off customers visiting a business such as a grocery store or restaurant. They are associated with unsanitary conditions, and for good reason.
