    Quick Facts About Drain Flies

Drain flies often get mistaken for tiny moths, and are sometimes called moth flies.

Drain fly larvae (also called maggots), are larger than adults, with a pale middle section and darkened ends.

Drain flies do not fly very far, and are often seen walking around.

    What Attracts Drain Flies?

As their name suggests, drain flies are particularly attracted to drains and sewers. Adult drain flies feed on decomposing organic matter and reproduce in dirty water.

Drain fly larvae feed on microorganisms present in dirty or stagnant water, which is why they prefer to nest in and around clogged drains, sceptic tanks and sewer pipes.

Drain flies will also nest in areas with moist decaying organic matter such as compost, garbage bins and sewage treatment beds.

In the home, they can be most often found around kitchen and bathroom drains, especially if they are dirty or clogged.

Should I be Worried About Drain Flies?

Drain flies don’t pose any serious health threats to humans. However, in some cases they have been known to aggravate bronchial asthma.

In general, drain flies are simply a nuisance to home and business owners. They reproduce quickly, and their presence can be unsightly.

Removing drain flies from your space involves proper cleaning of the drains they nest and feed in. Simply pouring hot water or bleach down the drain will not completely remove a drain fly infestation.

If you are struggling with drain flies, give us a call. We will take the proper steps to ensure the infestation is completely removed and their breeding grounds are thoroughly eliminated.
