The term “paper wasp” refers to a specific subfamily of wasps called Polistinae. 

While they are not technically part of this subfamily, yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets are sometimes referred to as paper wasps, due to their behavior of building nests out of molded plant material resembling paper.

True paper wasps build nests featuring open combs with cells containing larvae.

Paper wasps secrete a chemical that repels ants around their nests.

Paper wasps build their nests in hard to reach areas, such as eaves, soffits, and high tree branches. 

Like most wasps, paper wasps are omnivorous and will feed on a variety of fruits, nectar, insects and larvae. A garden or fruit tree orchard is a prime location for paper wasp activity.

Paper wasps are attracted to flowers and function as pollinators. They are sometimes considered beneficial by gardeners.

Unlike yellow jackets and hornets, true paper wasps are not very aggressive. They will generally only defend themselves by stinging if their nest is directly threatened.

Some people react badly to paper wasp stings and will require medical attention as a result.
