    Quick Facts About Woodrats

Woodrats are a highly adaptable species of rat that can survive in a variety of environments, from deserts to forests to mountains.

Woodrats are sometimes referred to as packrats due to their propensity to build complex multi-layered nests made of twigs, stones and other debris.

Bushy-tailed woodrats are the only rat species native to Canada.

    What Attracts Woodrats?

Woodrats build extensive nests with materials they gather as they forage. Their nests are held together by urine or feces, and often feature middens – which are essentially piles of food waste.

Woodrats will use all types of building materials to construct their nests, from twigs to leaves to stones and man-made objects. They are particularly fond of shiny things.

Woodrats generally make their nests away from humans in hard to reach caves and crevasses, although they have been known to invade abandoned buildings.

Woodrats feed almost exclusively on leaves, shoots, twigs and seeds.

Should I be Worried About Woodrats?

Woodrats carry a host of diseases similar to other rat species. These are primarily transmitted through their urine and feces.

Due to their use of urine and feces to construct their nests, removing a woodrat nest from your property should not be attempted without the help of a professional.

If you notice woodrats on or around your property, don’t hesitate to give us a call. We’ll take the necessary steps to remove them safely and effectively.
